Volleyball came up short tonight 3–2 to a very good St. John team. It was a great atmosphere. We recognized our youth and middle school volleyball players. The volleyball team raised $1200 tonight to help fight cancer.

A youthful and short-handed Grand Valley football team lost to visiting St. John on Saturday, 28-25, at Reel Family Stadium.

Junior Carter Turk threw for 285 yards and freshman Mason Demshar caught eight passes for 170 yards and two scores, but when a fourth-and-goal pass was knocked down by St. John defenders inside the 10-yard line with 38 seconds to go, the Mustangs lost their second game in a row.

Grand Valley (3-3, 1-1 in the Northeast Athletic Conference) played without a handful of players, who were held out of action while the Ohio High School Athletic Association continues to determine their eligibility after transferring to Grand Valley this offseason.

"It was a young group out there for us tonight," Coach Matt Rosati said. "They fought as hard as they could. We just came up short."

The Mustangs were plagued by five turnovers, including an interception return for a touchdown. They also had more than 80 yards in penalties.

Still, Grand Valley was in position to win at the end. After the young defense held St. John and forced a punt, Turk piloted the Mustangs down the field in the final four minutes of the game. But on fourth down from the 8, Turk's pass was batted down at the line of scrimmage. St. John took a knee on the final play as the clock ran out.

Making his first varsity start at quarterback, Turk threw for 285 yards with two touchdown passes to Demshar and one to sophomore Hunter Doing, who had four catches for 74 yards. GV's other touchdown came on a punt return by senior Lane Gallagher.

"Carter was phenomenal," Rosati said. "Carter Turk did a tremendous job stepping into a situation he wasn't really prepared for. He stepped in and did a tremendous job. I have nothing but good things to say about how he performed.

"We had two freshmen - Mason Demshar and Lukah Mramor - who played on both sides of the ball. Hunter Doing is another guy who came out and played both ways. I'm very proud of them."

Across the board, Rosati is proud of how his short-handed team performed, saying, "We played hard. We just made too many mistakes."

Grand Valley hits the road in Week 7, heading to Fairport to play the undefeated Skippers. Fairport defeated defending NAC champion Pymatuning Valley, 19-14, on Friday.

Rosati said he didn't have any clarity when the players who sat out the game might return, but added, "I would imagine we'll know something Monday morning."
