It was not an easy week for the Grand Valley football team.

The Mustangs tasted defeat for the second time this season, falling to visiting Wilmington, Pa., 49-13, in a game in which Coach Matt Rosati coached from a wheelchair after shattering his lower right leg earlier in the week.

"Wilmington was really good," Rosati said. "They took advantage of our inexperience and outplayed us. They turned us over on offense and we couldn't stop them on defense. That was the story of the game.:

Similar to McDonald, which defeated Grand Valley in Week 3, Wilmington is a big and experienced team that runs the power Wing-T offense. McDonald is 5-0 this season, while Wilmington is 4-1, with its only loss coming to Hubbard (28-21).

"We're gaining experience every week," Rosati said of his young squad. "We're playing some big football teams that down the road this year and for years to come will benefit us. We'll know what it's like to prepare for and beat teams like this."

Grand Valley's two scores came from junior Luke Giddings on a long touchdown run and from senior JayAnthony Williams on a 30-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Nate Stewart.

"It was definitely a learning experience for us," Rosati said. "But we're working hard and improving."

That work ethic, Rosati said, has been a breath of fresh air - especially after defeats.

"The kids' attitude is really great," he said. "Getting beat the way we did against McDonald and Wilmington, you can hang your head and pout. But these guys haven't done that. That's something we really emphasize - staying together. We need to get better and we will. That attitude is really a good thing."

Next up for Grand Valley is a home game against St. John, which will be played Saturday, Sept. 27 at Reel Family Stadium. The Heralds, who are members of the Northeast Athletic Conference as well, are 1-4, with their lone win coming in Week 3 against Beachwood. St. John lost to Pymatuning Valley, 52-14, on Friday.

"We need to come out and play well again," Rosati said. "We're going for our fourth win this year and want to start piling up the wins."

Rosati said he'll be coaching from a wheelchair for a while after falling off a ladder last week while trying to remove a bee's nest at his house.

"I was in surgery for three hours as they reconstructed my ankle and tibia in my right leg," Rosati said. "They got it all back together, but it'll be a while before I can walk again."
