What a wonderful PBIS lesson in Mrs. Morrone’s Kindergarten classroom! Remember the theme this month is healthy communication. Use kind words, be bucket fillers, and always try to make someone’s day brighter by using good healthy communication. Please talk to your children at home about this, as all of the classes in the elementary were working on it today!

For the second time in the last three years, the Grand Valley girls basketball team is league champion.

With a 59-16 win on the road against Vienna Mathews, Coach Zach Sirrine's team clinched the outright title in the Stars Division. The Mustangs are 17-2 (13-1 NAC Stars Division), giving the program its most wins in a season in over two decades.

To celebrate, the Mustangs will cut down the nets in their home gymnasium tonight (Tuesday) after the boys' home game against Mathews. They're doing that because the GV girls don't have anymore home games this season.

"It's a testament to the girls and the hard work they put in this season and over the last three years," Sirrine said.

Cloe Turk led the team with 14 points, with Riley Rowan, Sophie Thirion and Spencer scoring nine apiece. As usual, the Mustangs' winning recipe included smothering defense that often resulted into turnovers and quick conversions.

"I feel we played well, especially on defense," Sirrine said. "Defense is what creates offense for us for sure."

Another common thread is scoring balance.

"We feel on any given night, four or five different girls can lead us in scoring," Sirrine said. "I feel like it's tough to stop us because of that. You just can't take one girl away."

The Mustangs travel to Cardinal on Thursday before wrapping up the regular season next week on the road against Perry and Crestview.

The first three years of the Sirrine Era of Grand Valley girls basketball has been a rousing success, with a championship in Year 1, a second-place finish last year and another title this year. Over the past three years the Mustangs have a 48-16 record.

The future is bright, too, with no seniors on this year's roster.

"We'll have our whole team back next year," Sirrine said. "Obviously I feel our program is in a great spot. We're trending in the right direction for sure. These girls are all super hard workers. The best is yet to come for this group.
