September is School Attendance Awareness Month, and we’re celebrating in a big way! 🏈

Thanks to the Cleveland Browns Stay In The Game Attendance Counts Initiative, GVHS (or GVMS) will be holding a weekly grade-level competition all September long.

Here’s how it works:
✅ Each week, we’ll track which grade has the best overall grade-level attendance
✅ The winning grade will earn some fun in the sun with a special break outside on the track during 3A every Friday in September! 🌞 (For MS it will be during 5th period). GVES will get extra recess!
✅ If the weather doesn’t cooperate, don’t worry—you’ll get that time in the gym during lunch instead. 🏀

So show up, show out, and let’s see which grade will dominate the Attendance Challenge each week.
Let’s make September count, Grand Valley! 💪🎉

The quiet darkness and serenity at Reel Family Stadium was broken late Friday night by the sound of iron-on-iron. It was the sound of the Grand Valley victory bell ringing loud and clear after the Mustangs went on the road and opened their season with a resounding 54-22 win over Brooklyn. It's Grand Valley's first season-opening win in eight years, when Coach John Glavickas and the Mustangs defeated Jefferson, 30-22, in the 2017 season-opener. JayAnthony Williams scored three times, including an interception for a score, Luke Giddings powered in three more times, and the Mustang defense was in control throughout. Upon returning to Orwell, the players and the coaches took turns ringing the victory bell, located off the northeast corner of the stadium. "I'm very pleased and very happy with the boys and their effort," first-year coach Matt Rosati said. "They executed very well and they were excited. It was great to see them have success tonight." The Mustangs set the tone early with a defensive stop. Rosati said the defensive unit played well all night, from Jeremiah Corll in the trenches to Nick Crouser and Lane Gallagher at linebacker to Jamil Massengill and Williams on the back end - just to name a few. "We're not really big, but we're fast and aggressive," Rosati said. "We play a lot of sophomores on that side of the ball, and they gave us the momentum early." GV cashed in on its first offensive possession, with Luke Giddings scoring his first touchdown as a Mustang on a seven-yard run. Then the defense flexed its muscles again, with Williams picking off a pass and taking it back 65 yards to the house. It was all downhill from there for the Hurricanes. "Things couldn't have started any better for us," Rosati said. Grand Valley continued to pour it on, building a 30-0 lead in the first half with a blitzkrieg, no-huddle offense that saw the Mustangs run off 50 offensive plays in the first half alone. Touchdowns by Giddings (five-yard pass reception), Mason Kocab (six-yard run) and Giddings (seven-yard run) opened up a big lead the team never relinquished. Two of Brooklyn's touchdowns came on kickoff returns, something Rosati said the Mustangs will shore up heading into a Week 2 game against Ravenna Southeast. Rosati praised his team from top to bottom, but heaped much on the big, experienced offensive line of tackles Austin Miller and Max Thirion, guards Blake Taylor and Kyle Mullett, and center Bryce Meeker. "They played like the veterans they are," Rosati said. "They did a tremendous job run-blocking. We only have two guys going both ways, so we have a lot of depth that we're able to use to our advantage." With their first win under their belts, the Mustangs were up early Saturday morning going over film and lifting weights in preparation for a trip to Ravenna next weekend - and a happy return to school Monday morning as victor. "This win does a lot for these kids," Rosati said. "They were excited to get the win. They've worked hard for this. It's going to be a good day going to school on Monday after this. I'm excited for them." The game was the first Cleveland Browns' Game of the Week of the season. By winning the game, Grand Valley will receive $3,000 for its football program. Additionally, Rosati and two of his players will be a guest at a Browns game this season, where they will be brought down onto the field and introduced to the crowd prior to the game.
