We have created a "Safe Return to School” Task Force and will meet this week to work on logistics of returning to school. There will be a plan drafted and available as soon as possible to all. We want to return to full capacity and normal but most likely we have ES students here much of the week, MS/HS students will have a brick and mortar schooling combined with a distance learning model. This is all to increase social distancing and be as safe as possible. For those parents who definitely do not want their children in school, we will accommodate them with a distance learning model so they can still be a Grand Valley student and return when they are comfortable. Have a good week and we will update you with the plan asap. Dr. William R. Nye Jr. Superintendent, Grand Valley Local Schools 111 Grand Valley Ave. West Suite A Orwell Ohio, 44076 william.nye@grandvalley.school Phone: (440) 805-4545 Ext. 4, Option 1 Fax: (440) 437-1025 "Every Student Matters. All, Today's press conference indicates that the Governor will outline return to school guidelines on Thursday. Once we get those, the superintendents plan to meet with the local health departments and we will put together our return to school plan. I will let you all know as soon as I can as I am eager to create our return plan and roll it out to all. Have a good day! BN Dr. William R. Good Evening. This is Dr. Nye and I want to let everyone know that we are sending out an electronic “intent to return to school” tomorrow form for all Grand Valley families to fill out. We hope to return to school as normal as we can. We know the best education is a traditional education where all the kids are here and have all the extracurricular activities available to them. However, we will be facing many health guidelines and there will be challenges. We will make sure each student has a device next year so if we have to modify our format, they will be successful. We know some parents have students with health risks and we will have programs to meet all student and parent needs. We need each family to fill out the “intent to return to school” form so we can properly prepare for teaching spaces, technology needs, transportation adjustments, food service adjustments and extracurricular activities. We are excited to have every student return this fall and get back to our normal school setting as soon as possible. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

Hi Grand Valley Elementary Kids, Families and Staff. This is Dr. Winer and I wanted to give you an update as we end this school year. This is our LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL. We will have our Student School Stuff Pick up on Friday, May 29th from 1:00-6:00pm. We have a bag for each student filled with supplies, books, yearbook, class picture (if you ordered them) a Report Card and maybe a treat! BUT... HERE’S A CHANGE....Instead of pulling up to the cafeteria doors, you will pull up to the 3rd grade doors. We will have a sign on the sidewalk so you’ll be able tell which doors are the 3rd grade doors. Please, put a sign in your window with your child’s name and teacher’s name so we can quickly get your bag out to you. Our Food Service and Transportation departments will continue to bring breakfasts and lunches to the drop off spots for the remainder of this week. Starting next week, Country Neighbor will be providing the meals. The Drop off spots will remain the same but times will vary a bit but you will have that information before Monday. This year did not go as we had hoped. We know how hard this school closure has been on kids and families. Many of you have asked about next year. Right now, we are planning on starting in August but with changes such as social distancing, no shared materials, individual desks and chairs for all, frequent hand washing breaks, individual water bottles brought home and washed daily, just to name a few new practices. Grand Valley administrators and staff will be meeting throughout the summer and will be asking for your input as we plan for next year. We will be providing you with information so there won’t be any surprises in August. You and your children will know exactly what to expect. That’s it for now. I hope to see you all on Friday, May 29th, 3 days from now, to pick up your School Stuff. Remember, pull up to the 3rd grade doors. Stay Safe. Stay Healthy!

Hi Grand Valley Elementary Kids, Teachers and Families, This is Dr. Winer and I wanted to give you an update on how we will be ending the 2019-20 school year. We would like all completed school work to be turned in by Friday, May 15th. The school entryway doors are opened from 9am-9pm Monday - Friday. Just put the completed work in the appropriate grade level box. Keep whatever work has not been completed and work on it during the summer. The week of May 18th-22nd is devoted to the Virtual Field trips your teachers sent you or take a Field Trip of your own. Also, Mr. Mailach has posted a Phys. Ed. Challenge Week with activities that will be a whole lot of fun. Look on our school website for those activities. Your teachers posted those as well. School supply pick up for all the elementary, including preschool, will be on Friday, May 29th from 1-6pm at the Cafeteria Doors. You will be picking up a bag with your school supplies and all student belongings from cubbies and desks,as well as report cards, and class pictures and yearbooks if you purchased them. Just drive up, with a sign in your window. Please don’t get out of your cars, we will bring your bags to you. I hope you are all doing well and are healthy. When I reflect on the past 8 weeks I am saddened because I miss you all so much. Who would have imagined that this pandemic could even happen? We have learned to adjust to new norms and we are OKay and we will continue to be OK because we are strong, capable and besides...it’s almost summer! See you on Friday, May 29th. Stay healthy!

Grand Valley Seniors and Families, Late afternoon yesterday I got confirmation that the Ashtabula County Health Department approved our drive thru graduation plan. We will have graduation on May 23 (rain date 24th & 30th) starting at 11:00 a.m. and ending at 3:00 p.m. We were approved to bring 10-15 cars on campus every 30 minutes to walk across the stage. Please see the attachments for the traffic flow and your time to arrive. Each student is permitted to bring one vehicle and only the student and parents are permitted to exit the car when it is your turn to walk across the stage. Once you have walked across the stage and picked up your diploma you have to return to your car and exit the complex. It was stressed by the health department that we can not allow people to congregate on campus and that we must have police presence. Please have a sign with your name on it to show Mr. Varley and Mr. McConnell when you enter the complex. We will be pre recording the speeches and videotaping each graduate walking across the outdoor stage. After all graduates have received their diploma, Mr. Schick will edit and post the video on YouTube. All graduation cords will be passed out to you the day of Graduation by Mr. Varley and Mr. McConnell prior to walking across the stage. Decorating your cars is permitted. I know this is not what you or your parents envisioned for your Graduation and it is not what I or your teachers had planned for you either. Understand that we are all operating under strict guidelines from the state and local government agencies. This plan was submitted twice (with revisions) in order to get approved. We will get through this together! Mr. Hitchcock

To GV Seniors and Parents from the Conversation Station: Conversation Station is implementing an “Adopt-A-Senior” program for Grand Valley Senior students. Seniors will be randomly paired with a caring family in the community who will send them an encouraging congratulatory card (and possibly a small token, like a gift-card) in the mail. Parents of seniors would simply need to send their students name and address to CS.Orwell@gmail.com if they want to participate in the program, and they will confidentially send the information to a family on the list! Then, the family will send something to the senior in hopes to help lift their spirits and let them know that the community is thinking of them during this time. Hi GVES Families. Several of you have called school or emailed about confusion, concerns, questions, etc. and have given me suggestions for clarification. Please understand that things are changing quite rapidly and plans made today may change in 2 hours from now! So please bear with us. The ES office will be open tomorrow, Friday 3/20, from 8:00-2:00. The office will be closed next week - Monday -Thursday. The Office will open on Friday, 3/27 from 7am-3pm and on Monday, 3/30 from 10am-6pm for families to pick up activity packets for the week of 3/30. Even if the office is closed, Mrs. Fuller and I can answer the school phone remotely. If you have a question...just call 440-805-4545. For the work your child has completed: there are Drop Off boxes in the ES Office foyer. The outside doors will be open from 8am-10pm. The Food Buses have drop off boxes for completed work, too. Get some food and drop off work! I’ve seen and heard so many great ideas of things to do with kids while you’re at home during this crisis. . I learned of a FREE app today on the news, Busykid. It’s all about kids doing chores, getting an allowance and managing their money. I’ve seen posts of kids and families doing all kinds of things together. Please post photos and ideas of the things you and your family are doing together. It will give others some ideas. Let’s hope this is a once in a lifetime thing so as a family document it by journaling in a book, online or in photos. We are living history! Take advantage of being “locked down and in” and have family dinners, play games, go outside and play, bake together, clean together, exercise together. Our teachers will be in touch throughout the school closure. If you need help, just call us. And don’t forget the breakfast/lunch drop off. Above all, stay healthy.

From the Office of Dr. William R. Nye, Jr.: Subject: Lockdown Date: November 5, 2019 Earlier today the school sent out a message indicating why we closed our doors and kept students on the buses. I should of not used the word "funny" as I was using it in the context of "strange or suspicious noise". It was actually a popping sound off in the distance that only one staff member heard. As a safety precaution, we put our safety plan into place. After much investigation and deliberation, the administration and law enforcement officials deemed the campus to have no danger. We take all safety concerns here at Grand Valley seriously. Best Regards, Dr. William R. Nye, Jr.

Today we had staff lock doors and halted elementary unboarding because someone reported a funny noise in the distance. We had no evidence of any danger but to be precautionary we had staff lock doors and buses board and drive off site. After much investigation by school officials and first responders there was nothing evident of any danger. School is back to normal business.

On Tuesday, the GVHS College Prep Algebra I students used motion sensors to explore the two big ideas for the state standard that requires that students can model the relationship between two quantities and interpret key components of their graphs. (F.IF.4) They had a lesson on the topic the day prior... they can "talk the talk"... today they put that knowledge to use by "walking the walk". They discussed what type of motion they would have to undergo to create the five distinct sections of a graph that was projected onto the board. They then had to "walk" their ideas towards and away from their motion sensors that would graph their walk. They finally had to see if they matched the given graph. It was a fun day filled with technology applications and high order thinking.

Homecoming will be held on Saturday, October 5th. Tickets go on sale the week of Sept. 23rd. Tickets are $10.00. This year we plan to continue our homecoming tradition with a homecoming parade. Each grade level, 9th-12th grade, is asked to create a grade level float. Floats will parade around the track Friday, Oct. 4th at approx. 6:00 pm, just before the introductions of our homecoming court candidates. Please keep a few things in mind: 1. Each grade level should name 2 captains which will report the float design to Mrs. Brumit prior to the homecoming parade. Everyone is encouraged to participate. While a grade level is permitted to have more than one float, it is highly recommended that you work together on one grade level float to demonstrate class unity. 2. The theme of our parade is "GV Starlit". All floats should be tasteful or they will not be permitted to enter the parade. 3. Floats must be cars or trucks hauling wagons. No tractors or vehicles which could do damage to our track will be permitted. 4. An award will be given for the best grade level float that wins. Our goal is to increase school spirit. Please have pride in your Mustangs, organize a parade float for our football game, and plan to attend the game at 6 pm on Friday, Oct. 4th just to show Mathews how much school spirit we truly have!

To raise awareness of the Academic Challenge/Quiz Bowl team in the high school, the team challenged teachers to a battle of brains. As a fundraiser, the student body donated spare change to the teachers they wanted to see compete. The students won both games by very narrow margins-one by just one question and a bonus. Students were nervous as they faced "the people who taught us this stuff" said Ian Dyke a junior. Teachers were nervous as they were unfamiliar with the buzzer system and information retrieval isn't quite what it used to be!

Yesterday 15 students from Grand Valley traveled to Youngstown State University to take part in the 41st annual English Festival with 1300 students from Ohio and PA, and let me tell you, they answered the question, “Who is Grand Valley?” with stunning style! Abigail Chernesky stormed the stage to collect her Honorable Mention award in the “Art” contest, and then - in a command performance - she returned to the stage to collect $100 dollars, a t-shirt, two books and a pin when she took first place in the distinguished “Journalism Workshop” category! Not to be outdone, Alyssa Spencer collected her $100 dollars, books and pins in the prestigious Candace Gay Memorial Essay Contest by placing 3rd out of more than 500 entries! To all Grand Valley Middle School parents, Your child will be coming home with a letter about an assembly we will be having first thing tomorrow morning. The assembly is the Rachel’s Challenge. The focus of the assembly is to teach students how to spread kindness and respect , stop social isolationism, and prevent bullying. Some of the content in the assembly will be very emotional as Rachel was one of the students killed in the Columbine shooting. If you are concerned that your child may have a negative experience because there will be a discussion about the Columbine shooting, specifically relating to Rachel, please return the letter that is coming home with your child today and is also posted under the News on the Grand Valley website.
